unwanted file keeps reappearing. how can i kill it forever. how can we block unwanted files?

scumware invasion appears to be in progress
have enough antivirus and security software to stop it from totally succeeding.

there is one file that is key to its operation
    desktop.htt
    it showed up today
killed it with file assassin, but it keeps coming back.

can not find where the file is coming from.

how can we permanently kill this file off

is there a way to block unwanted files from ever being installed at all ?

how can we find what is putting it back on the pc and eradicate that program forever too

    we really need help
    any tips appreciated

    ps
we had this problem a few months back but then file assassin permanently killed it off
now it is back and we can only temporarily delete it and then it comes right back

ran mbam, did not find any problems

anything else that might do the job ?

Lots of hits on Google for a search on desktop.htt.
It appears to be a perfectly valid file!

    Try this one.

There's also a Microsoft bug fix: "Restore My Active Desktop" button appears on the desktop

Does it happen too if you boot in safe mode?

    do not have active desktop

    do not want active desktop

desktop.htt may be legitimate, but the scumware trying to use it nefariously is not.

the display question also posted *is * a different question than the desktop.htt thread that some super moderator thought was too similar to a previous one.

this question was how to stop unwanted files from showing up and how to stop programs from doing that to us, and how to find those hidden programs and rip them out.

as to the desktop display problem:

note that while the initial symptom was the same the problem had a different cause and a different workaround as the so called duplicate post noted. the old fix did NOT work !

that makes it a brand new problem.

fortunately our google search this time turned up other solutions and killing desktop.htt with file assassin.
that did NOT work this time.

we did get changing the display parameters to make the screen look right again.
but that did not do anything to kill off any scumware nor the program that keeps modifying desktop.htt

and others report that that fix only worked once, just like killing desktop.htt only worked once.
this scumware virus seems to adapt to the ways you bypass it.

thanks bruce, will try that registry fix next time. and i am sure there will be a next time.

have not tried safe mode. yet.

the temporary work around has us going again. but we really need a way to stop unwanted files from being installed and used by scumware. and more importantly to track down the source that keeps putting it back after file assassin rips it out.

Safe mode or even using something like SysInternals AutoRuns can allow you to determine if the rogue app is starting with your system.

If what you need is control over what is running, I suggest you try OnlineArmor or another HIPS. OnlineArmor is what I recommend. It will request your permission for any app that wants to run in your system.

Have you checked the Show Hidden Files selection in folder options. Perhaps this is normally a hidden file unless you show all files. This is just a WAG here.
