    Startup error.

Help please. Suddenly have a problem in the last few days. When I start my PC not all the desktop icons
display, and the tray icon for MSE stays red. This lasts for about 4 or 5 minutes before everything displays correctly again.
    Many thanks
    Dave

I would say what is happening is that your startup is taking a bit too long. MSE behaving like that during a long boot is known and has been discussed before here, on the Lounge.

You can try and diminish the startup time, maybe by reducing the number of apps that start automatically. You can try using WhatInStartup for that.

Dave, We have oft discussed the number of apps starting with Windows. It seems all S/W we install these days wishes to add an .exe file in the Startup folder, even if it's only an auto update check. All these startups do slow the boot process. And with today's modern PCs it is not necessary to have something running in the background to get it to open quickly when needed.

The aforementioned What's In Startup is my choice as well. Another possibility is Autoruns for Windows. This app will give a great deal more info. For startups just be concerned with the Logon Tab.

Thanks Rui and Medico. The MSE seemed rather strange which I had not seen before, thats why I posed the question.
I have 5 apps on startup so will see on the next startup.
    Regards
    Dave

I have seen that myself, Dave, back when I used it. It does get back to normal once boot completes.

    Cool

According to your images posted one of the things slowing down your boot is the CD drive. Maybe it requires the drivers updated or refreshed by uninstalling the driver from device manager and letting windows find and re-install the driver.

Or you could try unplugging the CD drive and see if it boots faster. If so then updated drivers are needed or the drive is faulty.

All typing errors are my own work and subject to patents pending. Except errors by the spell checker. And that has its own patients.

    Clive,
See attached message when I try to update drivers, so I assume all is OK.
    Thanks

Dave, this just means that you have the latest drivers that have been certified by MS. It does not mean the manufacturer has not developed new drivers that are awaiting MS certification. Might be worth a visit to the manufacturer site to see what's available.

The CD drives are fairly inexpensive devices that do go bad. It is a possible H/W problem as well.

Medico, if there was a problem with the CD drive would this not show up on every startup, as I cannot
    find any driver updates?
    Thanks

Are you online during this "red" time? On a bunch of my older systems that start up fairly slow I can tell MSE is waiting for the Internet so it can check if it has the latest definitions or downloads them before it turns green. If so then MSE is probably symptomatic of some other problem and not directly related. Slow optical drive recognition is a new one on me though.

I have found that those stats regarding startup and shutdown times vary in a noticeable way. Unless you repeatedly find the CD Drive there, the value you found should be seen as a one time thing and not assigned too much importance.

Yes I am online. Todays startup was normal, no red time, so it appears back to normal.
    Thanks

Rui, it appears to be a one time thing. Perhaps I was in too much of a hurry to pose a question to the forum, should have
waited a day or so. Great to have all you knowledgeable guys to turn to.
    Many thanks
