Question Apps went missing from Windows 8.1 Pro Start Screen

    Hi

I use a Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit operating system. When I booted my computer today, I noticed something peculiar. Most of my apps like MS Word, MS Excel, Adobe Reader, VLC Media Player etc. went missing from the Start screen. Even when I click on the down arrow and go to the App screen I am not able to find any of those. Searching for these in the App screen does not return anything. I tried the search box which comes from Charms screen as well, with no success. I know these apps are installed in my system because I can see them in Programs and Features window and these apps are also working fine. For example, if I have to open up Excel and I would have open up an existing excel file to bring up Excel but there is no other way I could bring the Excel on just by searching the app and clicking on it. It was working fine till yesterday!

And this weird thing is happening with only half of my installed apps while the remaining half I can still see in the App screen and search as well. For example, KM player, Calculator etc are present in the App screen.

I have not done anything unusual or extraordinary since yesterday.

Can you guys please help? This is driving my crazy! Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi and welcome to the Lounge.

Did you reboot your computer since you noticed that?

Did you try a system restore? Maybe that can be the quickest way to get your system back to what it was. Won't affect your data.

System Restore was an excellent idea which did not come to my mind. I jumped up and tried it. I system restored my system to two days ago just now but without any success. Its still the same! Very Weird. Windows 7 was so much better!

Hmmm... I don't know how to get them all back in a simple manner, but if they are desktop apps, you can find them in the disk, right click them and add them again, by choosing Pin to Start.

It's quite weird that it happened and can't be fixed by a system restore.

Have you tried running SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated command prompt?

Try opening the start screen, move your mouse and a down arrow should appear near the lower left corner of the screen. Try clicking on it.
