Bug with StartIsBack+ and Windows 8.1

I've just discovered a bug with StartIsBack+ and Windows 8.1. I never saw this with StartIsBack and Windows 8.0, and so I am guessing that perhaps there is some incompatibility between the two, perhaps in the way that StartIsBack+ is handing Desktop Mode. Or maybe Microsoft has changed some rules in Windows 8.1 pertaining to Windows Explorer in Desktop Mode.

    Basically, it's like this:

When you are in Windows Explorer, and you click on a folder on the left side of the display, all of a sudden you go into the Tablet interface. Then, a moment later, you are back in Desktop Mode. However, Windows Explorer is now closed, and you must reopen it.

I haven't had any problems with clicking on any folders on the right side of the display.

My guess is that Microsoft is moving further and further away from Desktop mode as they move forward with updating Windows; and there is therefore now some function which used to work (i.e. the folders on the left side) which now has less functionality.

Perhaps I should look for an alternative to Windows Explorer.

It's called File Explorer in Windows 8

For what it's worth, I don't see this problem in Classic Shell.

I don't get that effect with StartIsBack+, but there is a 1.5 just out with some bug fixes.

    Jim,

I'm using SIB+ 1.0.1 with Win 8.1 Pro 64 bit and I do NOT see this behavior either. I'll upgrade to the 1.5 version and post back. HTH

Update: I just updated to SIB+ 1.0.5 and still do NOT see this behavior. You may want to check out other possible causes.

I have 32-bit Windows 8.1. Not sure if that matters.

I'll upgrade SIB tonight and see if the problem goes away.

It's "called" File Explorer", but it answers to "C:\Windows\explorer.exe".

And no, I don't have that behavior, either (64-bit).

I don't either. Oh shucks, I'm using "The Classic Shell 4.0". Sorry!

It works equally well, whether installed on Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1.
It's just a great program and SO VERY customizable. You can make your desktop look like whatever you want. (well, almost everything)

    I have 1.0.5.

I did a bit more testing. The problem occurs if you right-click on a folder on the left side.

Left click causes no problem, but right click does.

It only kills File Explorer; my browser window and Thunderbird stay open.

I looked for 1.5, but I couldn't find it. The newest version I found was 1.0.5, which is what I have.

v1.5 is a Beta release. I just upgraded my laptop (8.1) to StartIsBack+ 1.05. I checked before and after the upgrade for the error you're getting, but I don't have it. Right-click on a folder in the left pane of Explorer gives me a context menu, and nothing untoward happens.

Perhaps my problem is unique to 32-bit Windows; it seems that everyone else here has 64-bit Windows.

My daughter has an almost identical setup. We both have 2 GB of RAM, and we both have 32-bit Windows 8.0, then upgraded via the Store tile to 8.1. We both have StartIsBack+, and we both have Trend Micro Maximum Security.

She also has the same issue with right-clicking on a folder in the left side of File Explorer.

Does the right-click folder issue remain if you disable StartIsBack? (Start, Properties, Advanced, Disable, Logoff, Logon.)

It's not clear to me why you believe this is a StartIsBack "feature".

What I believe is that Microsoft has changed some rules from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1, and the traditional File Explorer now doesn't work exactly the same in 8.1 as it did in 8.0. As far as StartIsBack, perhaps they didn't cover every single base when they updated their software to work with Windows 8.1.

Trying "disable" to see if the problem persists.

Ok. I disabled Start Is Back and restarted the computer. I went into Desktop Mode and opened File Explorer. I expanded the C: drive (in the left panel) to reveal some folders. I right-clicked on one of the folders, and File Explorer shut down, and I was momentarily in the Tablet interface.

This bug has nothing to do with StartIsBack+. It is apparently a Windows 8.1 "feature", and based on the fact that no one else here can reproduce it, it apparently only affects 32-bit Windows 8.1.

Any other 32-bit Windows 8.1 users out there who can test the above?

Any 64-bit Windows 8.1 users who can reproduce this bug?
