How do i start services up?

    Hi,
I am having problems with a Microsoft window that keeps popping up on me like every minute! To make a long story short I talked to someone at Microsoft and they said I had to take it into staples to have a repair there fix the problem. What he explained too me was that box that comes up when you enter msconfig and under the services tab I got a lot of stuff that is "not running".He said I need to get that stuff running then get a good antivirus software on my computer because right now I have nothing. My question is does any one know how to get thoses things in there up and running again?.
Second is there a free antivirus software out there that is 100% free? one that will remove the malware once it is found and not charge anything!.

Quite often once you have removed any malware, the services should resume and a good anti-malware program is the free version of MBAM and you can also run ESET's Free Online Scanner.

With the ESET scanner, click on Advanced and tick all of the boxes except the last one and depending upon what you have on your computer, this scan can take a while to complete and running scans with both can provide extra insurance.

The free version of MBAM is just an anti-malware scanner and you can choose one of these free AV programs to install http://www.techradar.com/news/softwa...-rated-1057786 but a Google for best free AV programs can give you other rated programs.

    MBAM - http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

    ESET Scanner - http://www.eset.com/int/home//produc...J&attr=3917268

ESET also has a tool that will restart services normally stopped by infections which you can also run after doing a full scan with MBAM and/or ESET's Scanner.

This link is the active .exe for ESET's tool http://kb.eset-la.com/library/ESET/K...icesRepair.exe

Hi there pouncethecat2002 and welcome to the lounge.

I'm a little concerned as to who told you that all the services in the msconfig tab should be running, that is not the case as a lot of services will only run when required.

Can you provide further info including what version of Windows you are using & details of the window that keeps on popping up? A screenshot of it would be ideal.

Black Viper has a ton of info on his webpage for all versions of Windows, including info on Windows services. Take a look and see if his info will assist in your decisions.

Unless you are willing to really investigate the service dependencies and what the service really does, you should probably just leave the defaults alone. Service descriptions in the service applet do not always tell you all the service does.

Yes, I've just had a 404 for that link as well (first time).

Try this one http://kb.eset.com/library/ESET/KB%2...icesRepair.exe and see if this MS fixit will help also http://support.microsoft.com/mats/wi...all_diagnostic as problems with Windows Firewall and BFE can disrupt Services.

    Did MBAM find anything ?
