Requesting virus scan... (Word 2000 (9.0.2720))

Every time I load Word, whether I'm loading an existing document directly from Windows Explorer or just opening with a blank document, the load is delayed for up to 30 seconds (sometimes longer). In the status bar it says "Requesting virus scan..." I'm using Norton System Works 2000, including Norton Antivirus 2000, which starts when I boot up and remains resident. I've looked everywhere to see if I can turn something off, either in Word or in Norton Antivirus, to end this annoying delay. Can anyone help me?

For NAV 2000, see document 1999091612160606 at Symantec's web site, or, e.g., q243579 in the MSFT KB.
For NAV 2001, there's an option within NAV to disable the add-in.

Do not also disable AutoProt in NAV, it's just the add-in that causes problems.
