Password property for field in SharePoint list

For background info on the project, please see this thread.

I need to create a text field in a SharePoint list with the password property. This is not available as standard, but it seems that one can create this functionality. I have Googled it, but with my extremely limited knowledge of Sharepoint, one can actually hear the info I found ricocheting past my head! . How would I go about doing this?

I have contributor rights on a SharePoint Foundation server.

    Which version of SharePoint?

Have you read SharePoint 2010 custom field types?
