Some Graphics Not Showing (IE5.5 SP2)

    Hi All:

This just started happening within the last week. When I view posts, some graphics (e.g. flags, smileys) show up & some just leave a big blank spot. I reloaded pages & sometimes I get more graphics.

I unchecked & rechecked the Tools/Internet Options/Advanced "always expand Alt text for images". Still having problems. Any ideas?

Have you installed Web Accessories recently?

    Hi Leif:

Not recently. I installed them some time ago, but I may have updated something that took them away. I seem to recall more choices on the right click context menu.

However, I just discovered something. While I had a page open for about a minute (with only some graphics showing), the rest of the graphics downloaded. So...something is causing my connection to hesitate, but I'm not sure what.

Does your lower status bar show the images still downloading?
I'd be tempted to clear out your cache and set your temp files setting to check for new versions every visit (if it isn't already).

    Hi Leif:

The status bar shows nothing during the "pause". I cleaned out my cache recently & it's set to refresh with every visit. Just a moment ago, I clicked refresh on this page & your message popped up. However, the flag by your signature was missing. I clicked refresh again (actually I used shift+refresh this time), & your flag appeared.

I just tried the TagPanel & only some of the icons appeared. Same with the Smileys. My resources are at 38%, which shouldn't affect anything. Very puzzling.

Re: Some Graphics Not Showing (IE5.5 SP2)

    Hi Phil,
The fact that it doesn't show images still loading (to me, anyway) indicates that IE believes it has finished loading them all - but why it shouldn't display them . . .
The only thing I can suggest is to delete all temp files again, set your cache to something pretty minimal, close down IE and open up again.

Other than that, I can only find this:

    Hi Leif:

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have the correct settings. I'll just clear out the temporary files, etc. again, as you suggest. Maybe something got corrupted when I "cleaned" out all the trash recently. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Hi Leif:

    I just deleted all temp files, emptied the cache, & rebuilt index.dat. I can see all the smilees. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

Ah, yes! Index.dat - I bet that was the culprit!
    Glad to hear you're sorted.

    Phil:

How did you force the rebuild of index.dat?

Re: Some Graphics Not Showing (IE5.5 SP2)

Just delete it in DOS and Windows rebuilds it anew upon rebooting.

You can automate the deletion in the autoexec.bat file if you like.

If you don't have DOS (WinNT/2K/XP), then log out as yourself and log back in under a different user name. Then you can access your index.dat files and delete them. When you log back in as yourself, the files are rebuilt fresh and new.

Re: Some Graphics Not Showing (IE5.5 SP2)

    Hi Ian:
I used a batch file from Fred Langa that boots to DOS & cleans your system. I have CleanAll.bat, but see <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=free&Number=18563&Searc h=true&Forum=free&Words=cleanall&Match=And&Searchp age=0&Limit=40&Old=allposts&Main=18563>this post</A> for his latest one. For some reason, the later version won't work on my system. Maybe it's because I don't have Norton Utilities.

    Lief/RM/Phil:

Thanks for the info. I had an old-timers again.

    Phil:
The link you posted is only available to LangaList Plus subsribers.

    RM:
Yep. A bit trickier under NT flavours. I played around a bit and finally decided to use a RunOnce approach by adding an entry for the batch file to
    "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrent VersionRunOnceEx"

This gives me the best of both worlds. The flexibility of batch plus the option to clean when required instead of every boot.
