    Unhappy Windows 8.1 Defender Problem

I have a week old new 8.1 computer. All of a sudden this morning I got a message in the action center that windows defender is not protecting my computer because it is turned off. I cannot figure out why, but more importantly I can't figure out how to turn it back on. I have right and left clicked on the app and the same dialogue msg comes up. I have gone to the programs listed and right and left clicked on defender and all that happens is the same msg comes up. Cannot access defender in any way....help! Tnx.

    Geek,
Tnx, but it doesn't work. I followed the steps exactly and every time i try to open defender (right or left click) all i get is the same dialogue box that says it is turned off and there is NO link to turn it back on. I am totally baffled!

    Rich,

Try checking if the Windows Defender Services are running.
    WindowsDefenderService.JPG
To open services from the Start Page just type Services and then click on the 1st result.

If they are not running you can start them manually by right clicking on then and selecting Start. HTH

Yes, I have avast installed. I questioned the computer people that installed my computer because I had read Defender was meant to work alone, but they swore they had it on all their computers and had no problems. Should I just uninstall avast and see what happens? Tnx for responding.

    Geek,
Tnx again but I tried that and it would not let them restart. It started with a progression bar and just stopped and said not able to restart.

The Avast install automatically disabled Defender. You should never have two real time AV apps installed at the same time. Decide whether you want Avast or Defender as your primary AV. If you want Defender as your primary AV, uninstall Avast and Defender should be re-enabled. If you prefer Avast, just leave things as they are.

Any manually installed AV app will disable Windows Defender. This is done automatically by the system. Avast is a pretty highly rated AV app. I would keep it for a while and see how things go. You might also consider adding Maleware Bytes Anti-malware. The free edition includes only manual scanning. To include real time protection, the Pro edition would have to be purchased.

    W Defender wont work

One day old, new HP laptop. Deleted McAfee, totally. W 8.1 64

W Defender won't open - says it's turned off (in Action Centre). Can't get into Defender settings.

    Doesn't even appear in Services

Greyed out in Control Panel, apps

Yet all files within the program itself can be seen in Explorer

Computer never been connected to internet.

Windows lady the other side of the world baffled - getting an level 2 call-back.

    ANY IDEAS, PPPPLEASE

Did you use the McAfee removal tool to get rid of it completely? If not, parts of it probably did not uninstall using the standard method.

    Yes.....still W Defender
    - not in Services, at all
    - will not start out of Action Centre
    - red flagged as a problem
    - just says "W Defender has been stopped"

How on earth do we bring the wretched thing back to life.....PLEASE
