Strikethrough colours? (W97, WinNT)

I just had a user ask me if it would be possible to change the colour of the strikethrough without changing the colour of the text it's striking through, and I can't find the answer. At least, as far as I can tell you can't, but I can't find anything that actually says so.

Has anyone come across this one, or even written a bit of VBA to do it perhaps? If it's even possible, of course!

Hi Beryl,

If you're talking about the strikethrough that you can apply as a font property, I don't think there's any way to make the color of that independent of the color of the text itself, with or without VBA. (It might be possible to use VBA to create some "cute" feature that would put a colored line through characters, but that would probably not work very well!)

Gary, I have to admit I suspected as much. Still, it was worth trying - and if it's worth trying, the lounge is the place to try it! Many thanks anyway.

PS Of course, if anyone else out there has any ideas ...

This is probably unacceptably tedious, but you could create a line using the Line Drawing Tool, change it's color to anything you like, and position that line over your text.

Thanks, rhconley - yes, I probably would consider it too longwinded, but if my user is determined enough to do it, maybe she would be interested! I'll put it to her, anyway. It seems to be the only possible way we're going to get it!

Hi,

Actually I'd tried the same thing, and initially thought this would be a useable solution, until I did the following: inserted an additional word, somewhere before the struckthrough text - everything then moved over to the right, except the strikethrough line which (of course) stayed right where it was! - that line is anchored to the paragraph, not to the word. So if you need to make any further changes in the text, this method of marking turns out to be impractical.

You should be able to tweak the Properties of the graphics line to be able to position it where you wish.

If you had Word 2000 then you could insert a line and use Format Autoshape, Layout, Advanced, Alignment, Left, Relative to Character to do this. See example attached.

True.

I do have W2000 at home - but unfortunately nobody has managed to convince my company to do the same ...

Beryl,

how badly do you want a solution? here's a bad one that will work with word 97.

after the text to be struck thru in a different color:
1. put in an {ADVANCE lx uy} field to move left and up. I'll describe x and y below.
2. type some underscore characters that's the same number of characters as the text to be struck thru and change its color to whatever you want.
3. put in another {ADVANCE dy} field to move down.
4. make sure you change back to your main text color

The idea using ADVANCE is to move the line. But how much?

The vertical direction, with the u and d options with a value of y, is easy - probably about half the font size, maybe a little less.

The horizontal direction, with the l option, is harder. This can be done by eyeballing. Alternatively, there was a macro on the board in the last week or so that returned the number of points in selected text. The output of that is exactly what you want for the l option.

Note that the same thing could be done by using hyphen characters in step 2. You would then NOT have u and d since the hyphen is already in the middle of the line. But you need more hyphens than underscores since the former is a narrower character.

For some reason, using the underscore also pushes the whole line of text down. I think I can guess as to why but it's not worth confirming the hypothesis.

I was just challenged to come up with a solution. I did get it to work. But I'd rather switch than fight: convert to Word 2K and the other solution before doing this.

Thanks Stuart - that's great!
I do have Word 2000, but didn't know about the relative to character feature (until now).
