How can I delete CD Player

My CDPlayer.exe keeps starting up for no apparent reason with the message "Please insert audio CD". When this happens, CDplayer becomes the active window and can mess up what I'm doing. This is now happening very often and becoming extremely irritating. As I can't find out why this is happening I thought I'd simply delete CDPlayer.exe as I'll never use this PC for playing audio CDs. However, if I delete CDPlayer.exe (either in DOS or Explorer) a new CDPlayer.exe re-appears within 5 seconds. A copy is also in the recycle bin. Any ideas how I can suppress CD Player ??

Have you recently installed any other multi-media software like Real player?

No, it's a new PC with Win2000 pre-installed and it's been happening from day 1. I've also tried deleting the AudioCD from Explorer/Folder Options/File Types but to no avail.

If it is brand new I'd be tempted to get onto the manufacturer or supplier. It may be a hardware fault that is triggering W2K into thinking a CD has been inserted.

    Otherwise:
Control Panel > Admin Tools > Computer Management
System Information > Software Environment > Startup Programs

Anything in there to suggest kick-starting CDPlayer?

    Check also your Startup folder.
I would recommend to uninstall all programs (Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs) that have "Trial" or "Demo" in its name.
To override your cdplayer.exe functionality, download Windows Media Player 7 from Microsoft Windows Update website (I don't think it will solve your problem).

Re: How can I delete CD Player

the supplier agrees it could be a fault with the CD drive but I don't want to send my PC away to get something fixed which I'm not going to use so I'm trying to find a way to disable CDPlayer.exe. What I can't understand is why CDPlayer.exe re-appears if I delete it.

There's nothing in Control Panel/..../Startup Programs referring to CDPlayer

That's the Windows File Protection Feature !

See Q229656 Optimizing Windows File Protection Service

I think the chances are it is a hardware fault - can you access data cd's OK? Do you still get the problem with a data cd inserted?

If you can be bothered, list all your running services shown in TaskManager - it may just show up a conflict of some sort.

    Thanks. Problem solved.
I'd wondered why there were so few component options in Win2000.
This tip needs circulating more widely

Re: How can I delete CD Player

To find out how to delete CD Player, go to the following URL:

    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.rojakpot.com/Other_Articles/Win2K_Tips/More_Windows_Components/More_Windows_Components.htm>http://www.rojakpot.com/Other_Articles/Win..._Components.htm</A>

That page tells you how to make CD Player (and a number of other things) appear in the Add/Remove Programs list. I have used this trick to reinstall CD Player, but not to remove it entirely. Presumably you can remove it from there as well.

(Edited by Leif to make URL live and say "Great Link!")
