IE 5.5 shuts down after 30 seconds

I am desperately trying to do my Christmas shopping and every time I open IE, I can go about two sites in (and I've actually been able to put something in my shopping cart) and then I get a "fatal" error message and it shuts down, along with half of the icons in my explorer task tray. If I try to open IE again, it shuts down, removing more icons from my explorer task tray. If I restart the p.c. (which is what the message says), it doesn't help. All I can get is that something's amiss with ftapp.dll. I've installed the service pack 2, and also have reinstalled win98.

Any ideas besides fdisking the hard drive and starting over?

Well, Google seems to think that ftapp has something to do with a virus.

The only site I can immediately find that carries any info on it is here at McAfee.

Any help?

Re: IE 5.5 shuts down after 30 seconds

I can't believe it's a virus, but it makes sense - since I'm at work, I'll have to wait until I have enough free time at home (where my errant p.c. resides) to track this down.

I wasn't quite sure (and don't mean to sound dumb here) about removing it from the add/remove. As I recall, I didn't see anything the last time I used add/remove to get rid of some other irritating programs.

As a further clue into the mess - I recentlly "upgraded" to Windows ME, hated it and downgraded back to Win98. My system admin here said I probably have some weird files left over that need to be removed.

I also remember one time when I was installing something and it put an ad monitor on my p.c. Perhaps this is what's causing the problem.

Thanks for the info! Maybe I don't have to dig out my old Win95 computer and hope it boots up so I can get all the stuff I'm supposed to buy for Santa....

Re: IE 5.5 shuts down after 30 seconds

I think the term virus here is used in its true sense, we are all used to it meaning destroying half the files on our pc and mass mailing the remainder to everyone in our address book .
It sounds as if it is unwanted (and unrequested) software that has installed itself - you probably weren't even aware it was there when it was downloaded. Your changing OS has left it with toothache and its now kicking up a fuss.

Re: IE 5.5 shuts down after 30 seconds

Thanks so much for your help!!!

Here's what I did:

1. Since the ftapp.dll was apparently embedded into the system(I tried to delete it while in windows but couldn't), I rebooted to DOS, then deleted everything in the c:ftapp directory.

2. I then continued to load windows and the registry adjusted itself.

Now I don't get bumped off any more and can buy Harry Potter stuff to my heart's (and budget's) content.

I reported this to the sys admin at work - we are quite concerned that this doesn't show up on any anti-virus sites except for McAffe and are investigating this issue for other OSes. If I ever figure out how I got it at home, I'll post it here.

This appears to be ADWARE not a Virus, so the AV checkers are not looking for it.

Dave - Adware would come from something I installed or a site I went to?
