    Question about MVPS Host file

I run W7 SP1 Home Premium; and use MSSE and Malwarebytes Pro. I am curious whether folks here modify their Hosts file through things like that offered by the MVPS site? I do, and it cuts out pretty much all of the ads that I would see otherwise.

I'm asking because today I ran a tool called DDS.com as recommended by the folks at Malwarebytes, and the output highlighted, among other things, that my Hosts file had been modified.

So, what do others do to cut down all the ads on their browsers?

    Thanks,
    Dick

I have reduced the number of ads by blocking the ad domains in my router. Not only does this eliminate some popup windows, but also I now see "Netgear" where once there was an ad on my screen.

There are some caveats with this method:
    1. Not all ads will be blocked; only those whose domains you have listed in your router's filter list will be blocked.
    2. Some of the links that you will want to click on will first take you to an ad website, and then to the desired website. If you have blocked that particular ad website's domain, you won't be able to get to the desired website by clicking on the link.

I primarily use hpHosts, installed, updated and managed via HostsMan, with the Windows DNS Client Service disabled. My main browser, Pale Moon, has DoNotTrackMe installed (and cookies are only accepted from sites visited).

Using HostsMan has the advantage of having a simple on/off interface should a blocked redirect or similar need to be allowed temporarily.

Don't forget that ads help keep websites afloat; if you value a site, consider unblocking it, if only partially, and clicking on an ad or two from time to time.

Hi Dick, when I used the MVPS hosts file it caused a few problems. I find using OpenDNS a better option.

    Roderunner:
I run OpenDNS also. However, when I wasn't also using the modified Hosts file I didn't find OpenDNS by itself preventing ads from showing. How do you have OpenDNS set up to do that?
    Thanks,
    Dick

Hi Dick, I had the info in pdf format and it gave a better view & explanation but was unable to remove / hide my email address. If you need more info just ask.

I was also running into occasional problems with the MVPS host file, which is why I switched to the hpHosts instead. I'm also a long-time OpenDNS user.
