Restoring VoIP from a Vista image to Win8: Is it possible?

Last week my wife’s PC was updated from Vista to Windows 8, and I have now completed the reinstallation of the various programmes and updates, except for VoIP Discount and VoIP Stunt.

She has a small sum in credit on them, not exceeding £5 in total, and would like me to restore them from the Macrium image created before Vista was replaced. I have doubts as to whether it’s possible to pick out two apps from an image and restore them to a new environment, and they may be old versions incompatible with W8, apart from which she can well afford to lose such a trivial sum.

However, I promised to look into the matter, so would appreciate any advice with regard to feasibility. Anything for a quiet life!

    George,

To the best of my knowledge you can not do this. You could successfully restore the files but NOT the required registry entries as the registry would have to be restored as a whole. If there is a way to do this it will surely be convoluted and maybe even dangerous. And I'm sure you'll incur more than 5 pounds of frustration not to mention the time involved. HTH

I have to agree with RG. No app I know can pick apps from an image and install them, so you'd need to have the installation files to add them. I wonder if you had them, whether the 5£ credit would be associated with an account, so that login in to such account would allow access to the credit. If that is not the case, then I would say you risk an inordinate amount of work for such a small potential loss.

Thanks, that was the answer I expected and was hoping for. When the wife came home from visiting a friend in hospital and was shown your replies she didn't seem too disappointed. just a bit more work for her to do.

This might be a bit of work but you could try the following....

Restore her Vista backup. Virtualize that installation with the free virtual hard drive tool of choice. Verify it works as a virtual Pc then reinstall Win 8 and access the voip programs through the virtual PC you created. I know its a bit of work but it should rescue the accounts your wife has the credit in....

Install a fresh, new equivalent to what your wife had. Pre-pay it about 5 pounds. Then tell your wife that while you couldn't restore the originals, fortunately the new service honored her prior credits. Tranquil life and you're a bit of a hero.

It always helps when you have expert opinion to show to the wife.

Thanks for that, I found it quite amusing, and it may even come in useful on some future occasion. However, the whole exercise has been unnecessary.

After being shown the replies from RG and ruirib, my wife accepted that she would have to register all over again, and I was given the task of installing for her whilst she was at one of her literary groups.

It turned out there is no installation involved, it works like a bank or credit card account, one logs in and there are all the details, including €1.23 credit. As she didn’t leave the log in details for the other account, it has been left for her to sort out, but I assume it uses the same system.

I had wondered how she managed to install it herself.

    PS Welcome to the lounge.
