Who makes the best disk drives?

A bit surprising results, I think...

There's also returns data from a European Etailer here (French only but data is Universal): http://www.hardware.fr/articles/911-6/disques-durs.html (that's #9, #8 is here, previous versions in English are here Components returns rates), should you want to check what's recently been available or you are planning a hardware upgrade.

A data recovery and forensic specialist I know of has always indicated that one really needs to stay current when buying drives. In other words, not go by past experience (though we all do right?) because at one time or another any of the [remaining] drive manufacturers can have a manufacturing control issue that causes a surge in drive failures for those particular drives for that particular time until the flaw is fixed.

The data would seem to back that up (HA!) as there seem to be distinct "bad batches" of drives here and there while others, even from the same company, are well within standards. I too though have noted the extreme reliability of Hitachi drives over time though my sample is very small (<10).

For standard HDD's I'm partial to Seagate, I've owned a bunch and never had one go down..some are 10 years old....all be it, they're used in a limited capacity now for non essential data backups. For SSD's I'm partial to the Samsung series...all though I've not owned one...after years of research, reviews and performance tests, I'll be buying the 840 Pro series or the 840 evo.
