    Office 2010 won't update or repair/uninstall

I use Office 2010 Pro on both a desktop and laptop, both run Win 8.1. Suddenly the laptop will not update any Office app. The desktop works flawlessly.

I finally decided to uninstall 2010 and reinstall to see if that would solve the problem but found that would not work either and I got this message:

"Error 1719 The Windows installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support...."
The header on the error window is "Microsoft Office Single Image 2010"

I have the 2010 Pro disk.

I have not seen that error on any other MS product and Update works fine on Win 8.1.

    How do I solve this?

Thanks for any help or advise you may offer.

    Jerry,
I started at the first suggestion and had no joy until I tried the SFC suggestion. That fixed my problem! Kudos for your help!
