    I keep getting a pop-up saying

"A new version of Software Updater was found. Do you want to update?"

Try running with your startup items disabled. If you no longer get the message, use a process of elimination to identify the culprit.

A small app called What's In Startup will show you what is starting with Windows and can easily disable or delete unwanted Startup items.
