New PC: Best Way To Go From 8.0 to 8.1 Pro for DOMAIN usage?

I have a new Dell XPS 8700 desktop that came with Windows 8.

There is absolutely NO INTEREST in ever using a Microsoft account (though we understand a throw away account may have to be created).

Machine needs to login to Windows SBS 2003 Domain.

Is there an FAQ explaining the steps to take this brand new out of the box machine to 8.1 pro, local account, in the least amount of steps? It has not even been powered on yet. In one of the newsletters Woody speaks of 3 hard to find steps that must be done correctly to use a local account only, but we have not found those 3 steps yet - and that article was before 8.1.

    Thanks.

Thanks Jerry, that's a great article - especially the concluding paragraph.

Anyone know more about the best path to get to 8.1 PRO?

    thanks

If you are saying that the Windows 8 install is not Pro then I recommend you upgrade it to 8.1 then to 8.1 Pro. See Easily Change Windows 8.1 Edition Without Reinstalling for instructions.

Yes, I really like the change MSFT made in this regard - not having to re-install.

I was not clear on whether to upgrade first before going to pro, so thanks.

I've seen various pricing for it, though, and read that going from OEM 8.0 to Pro 8.1 is NOT an upgrade, but instead one must purchase as "new customer", in effect getting no value for the OEM 8?

    thanks

The upgrade for any edition of 8.0 to the corresponding edition of 8.1 is free regardless of the source of 8.0. I don't know what the pricing is going from 8.1 to 8.1 Pro but it should be more palatable than going directly to 8.1 Pro from a prior version.
