    Diamond sound card won't install

My girlfriend has an HP XW4600 workstation, XP Pro sp3. She bought a Diamond XS 5.1 sound card (PCI) and it refuses to install for me. Before using the disc I first went to Device Manager and disabled the onboard sound ( I couldn't find it in BIOS ), the disc starts the driver install and then Installshield starts and pop's the error "Please Plug-In Xtreme Sound PCI". So I went to Diamond's site and downloaded the newer driver for XP and the same thing happens. I can't get past that error no matter what I try.
The card is listed in Device Manager as "other" multimedia device and has yellow mark since there is no driver installed.
I googled it and there are a number of hit's on the same problem but no real answer's for fixing the install problem.
Thanks for any and all answer's.

Have you double checked the physical installation and connections?

Yes, I tried 2 different PCI slots and inserted and removed and reinserted the card each time to make sure there was contact.

Did you follow the steps in the User Guide starting on page 6 exactly?

Sorry, I was looking at the page number in the PDF reader not on the document. The install instructions start on page 3 with the Windows part on page 4. It is important to wait to be asked for the disk.

yes, BUT the only step I missed was turning off the sound in BIOS since I couldn't find it. Instead, I disabled the onboard sound in Device Manager before I booted and started the card installation.

I let windows find the card in "found new hardware" then cancelled that and put in the disc. I also repeated that with the newer XP driver that I downloaded from Diamond

From what I've been able to find you should be able to disable the onboard sound in the Advanced section of the BIOS. Also, make sure that the PCI slots are not disabled.

Have you checked for a BIOS update?

I guess I will look through the BIOS again later today. No I haven't checked for a BIOS update. I guess I better do that also.
The BIOS on her HP is quite different than any others that I have encountered.
I assume the PCI slots are working because it found the multimedia card under "other"
Thanks for the advice Joe, I'll re-post when I have time to look at her computer again.

I give up. I told her to just send it back.
