Carriage return not working in Chrome and other applications

I've searched the forum with no luck so hoping for some advice. When I'm in Chrome (especially) and typing an email the carriage return does not work. I have to type the message on one continuous line and this is both frustrating and inefficient. In fact it is happening with this topic as well. I'm running Windows 7 Home and just don't know where to start. I did see something about text styles in google labs but can't see that as an issue as it happens in other applications as well. Any ideas? I tried CTRL and ALT with the carriage return and whilst this works intermittently in some places it doesn't solve the problem. Regards John

    Welcome to the Lounge!

Make sure that word wrap is turned on. I don't know how to do that in Chrome or IE, but I know that word wrap fixes the same problem in Notepad. Also, check the settings for your email service -- maybe there is a word wrap function there.

Word wrap is better than carriage return, because it doesn't matter which browser / editor you are using, what your type style or size is, how big your browser window is, etc. Word wrap will always fit the window you are working in. Carriage return works only if you have made no changes since you originally typed the document.

You may know this, but perhaps not, because at the Lounge there are all levels of expertise - beginner to expert.

Jim, thanks for the suggestion but that isn't the issue. I'm an experienced user so am very familiar with most applications for text and the like. This is just a problem on this particular pc. I'll keep looking to see where else I can find any suggestions. Regards John

I didn't want to imply that you didn't know; the problem is that you never know how advanced someone is.

The return key works in Notepad whether or not word wrap is turned on.

I don't think that's true in any program.

What I meant by that was that if you put a carriage return at the end of each line, and ANYTHING changes after that -- different fontstyle or fontsize, smaller text window, changes to the text -- it will throw off the formatting you set up with your carriage returns. Watch what happens if you put a carriage return after each line, and then move the right margin to the left. Each line will word wrap at the new, smaller right margin; and it will word wrap again where you originally put the carriage return.

Word wrap, on the other hand, adjusts to any and all changes made after the original typing of the document.
