CPU Usage nearly 100%

I h ave been travelling internationally for a month. When I started my office computer it responds very slowly to all commands, and frequently both Eudora and Netscape stop responding.

In the Task Manager I see that Process "Udserve.exe" is showing CPU ranging between 95 and 99% all the time. The other elements for that process are PID 944, CPU Time - follows a few seconds behind the time the computer has been operating, and Mem Usage 1,748K.

No other process is taking more than a tiny amount of CPU.

The CPU graph in the performance page just shows a steep rise to 100% when the computer starts and a straight line at 100% thereafter.

The computer is a Pentium 700Mh with 512 Mb RAM and two hard drives, one 10Gb and the other 36 Gb, both partitioned into three NTFS partitions, running Win2000 Pro.

Would someone please tell me how to reduce the CPU usage of this one process so the rest of the computer can run normally?

Any advice will be most welcome.

    Noel

I can't find any info on udserve.exe so this is a very wild guess:

Your post suggests you have not used your office pc for a month. Is it possible you have some tracking software that is simply logging everything on your hard disks, a task that it would normally only have to do as and when changes were made? (i.e. it is doing 30-odd days work all at once.)

'ud' - could that be undelete?

Can you search and find 'udserve.exe' and tell us what program it is?

Take a look at United Devices. Not sure, but it could have something to do with that.

    Re: CPU Usage nearly 100%

I found with a mention of udserve. It's a translation from German (the original page can be found here), and the page seems to be addressing problems with video and audio decoding. My guess is that it's this Undelete for Windows 2000 that is causing the problem so I would suggest searching the Add/Remove Programs applet for mention of it, and try uninstalling it or remove it from the startup sequence using msconfig for Windows 2000 (which you can find here).

Please let us know how you make out - this is an unusual problem!

    Thank you Lief,

As usual you are correct - "udserve.exe" is Executive Software's Undelete - but it is supposed to operate in the background when you delete a file. There is nothing in the documentation to suggest that it tracks files.

But of course after a month away I did transfer a large number of new and amended files back to my office computer from my laptop.

I decided to leave the computer run unattended for a day or so to allow it to finish what ever it was doing but after almost two days it was still using 98 - 99% of CPU time, so I tried reducing the priority of the service, but got Access Denied to that. I tried to uninstall Undelete but that just hung - no doubt because of the CPU being dominated by the program. Eventually I stopped the Service which allowed me to uninstall it, so the computer is now running normally.

I think I will try re-installing it to see if there may have been a fault in its operations that caused the excessive usage.

I will let you know what happens.

    Thank you again.

Thanks for the suggestion Dean. Actually it turns out to be Executive Software's Undelete - but that should just operate invisibly in the background, so I suspect something has gone wrong with it.

I have temporarily uninstalled it and will try to re-install it to see if that fixes it.

    Re: CPU Usage nearly 100%

Thank you Keely, you were correct - it is Executive Software's Undelete and I have tried removing it from the start up sequence to see what happened and sure enough all went well, so I have uninstalled it temporarily. It has given me no trouble in the year or so it has been installed so I suspect that a fault has developed.

I will re-install it and see if it works OK now.

Thank you for your good advice.

Wow. I'm kinda impressed myself, finding a German page and all...

Do I get bonus points or anything? I'm just really glad we figured it out.

    Well, you deserve a bonus!

Just to complete the story - I uninstalled Undelete then re-installed it and it now works as it should - CPU usage now shows zero almost all the time.

    Best wishes,

    Noel

    Re: CPU Usage nearly 100%

    Dear Lief,

Further to my earlier post - I did uninstall Undelete then re-install it and it now works as it should - typically reporting zero CPU usage and no effect on the operation of the computer.

Thank you very much for steering me in the direction of a solution. A clear head is often the best medicine for a problem!

    With best wishes,

    Noel
