too many spaces (MS Word 2000)

When using MS Word, typing a line of text, hitting return, and then trying to indent the new line of text by using the space bar does not always work. Often times the hundreds of spaces can be inserted before the curser actually starts to move to the right. This has happened with other versions of Word also.

AutoCorrect is on and will replace 2 or spaces with 1. Learn to use your "Tab" key.

Having had to troubleshoot Word documents that were made by a "Typist" are nothing but a head issue. Learn that the word processors are NOT used on a typewriter, but a computer and the rules are different.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

A few years ago, I received a 70 page technical specification from somebody with a well known computer company. It was a Word document that used ONLY the Normal style, including manual number of list items, etc.

Learn about Word's Styles.
Search here in the Word forum for Styles and you'll come up with many, many posts. Charles Kenyon has some very good links to help you out. The thread may have nothing to do with what you need, but this post will bring you to the links from Charles dealing with Styles that I was talking about. At least enough to get you started and on your way to understanding why Word does those silly things it does.
hope that helps. If you need more, you know where to find us!

Thank you for your help (I Think) I don't believe you understood what I was asking but thank you anyway.
I did receive two other very helpful replies.

Hi Kadmire:

I agree with Dave.
1. The only time you should be hitting return is when you're starting a new paragraph, not merely a new line.
2. If you want to indent the first (or more) lines of a paragraph, the best way is to use indents (you can move them with the mouse if you have the ruler showing), or better yet, build them into your styles. The third best way is to use the tab key.

i.e. it is not a good idea to indent by typing spaces at the beginning of a paragraph.

Cheers,

I Understood what you said.
My evil off-topic twin decided to make the posting, I could not stop him!
