unfortunately the cdroms disappeared along with the usb ports
until i can get some i/o working then i cant rebuild from scratch

i will have to cut and paste good registry pieces from another win98se box somehow

i need to know where win thinks the cdroms EXIST at as they do not show in the config listing
if i could tell win that they exist then i should be able to put in the driver etc and be able to reinstall from scratch

If you boot from the Windows installation CD you will be able to re-install. If you can't boot from the CD you have a hardware problem.

with all due respect i have a software problem

    a failed install deleted something
i saw the message but was not alert enough to say no

the cdroms do not EXIST anymore according to windoze
they check out just fine on the boot up test

i need to know where windoze thinks they are to show them in msconfig
they look like they are in the registry but cant verify the sub entries are correct
    they may have been diddled
but until i can find an equivalent one to compare with i cant be sure
and i am not sure if the cdrom driver is still linked to it

many the usb ports disappeared too at the same time
one printer wont work but the other one will on different usb
all other usbs dead except one printer

the monitor got set to low rez at the same time

only the floppy and keyboard work (plus one old printer)

if this is hardware tell me what piece could do all that simultaneously with a failed install that has all the symptoms of a software error

Your problem is much more serious than just finding where the CD should appear, you have major Windows corruption. There are only two solutions that I can think of.
    1. Restore a known good image backup.
    2. Install from scratch.
Both options require you to backup your data beforehand.

    thanks

microsoft had a 6 or 7 step fix
do each in sequence until one works

i am at the next to last which is create a subkey

i was in the process of trying to remove all data when the bad install killed the cdroms and usb ports
until i get at least the cdrom to exist in the config again i cant do anything except keyboard and screen view in low rez

the data is the most important thing i am trying to get to
being able to keep running photoshop would be a big plus
and it is in my office uptairs which is nicer to balance my checkbook then going to the basement pc to do i t
