Can I use 64 bit Windows

I have an elderly desktop, elderly, but given transplants regularly to keep it functioning. In Device Manager the processor is shown as AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual core 5000+ 2.61GHz.

It is running XP SP3, but I am considering another transplant, software this time. XP is 32 bit, but could I use 64 bit version of 7 or 8.1?

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor or the Windows 8/8.1 Upgrade Advisor.

Thanks, I checked the Upgrade advisor, to my surprise it found no problems, amazing for a system cobbled together 14 years ago. Now the choice is between 7 & 8. Win 7 I like, but I'll be forced to change yet again in a few years when M$ pulls the plug on that OS. Win 8 I dislike intensely, especially the touch screen facility, anyone who touches my monitor will get his wrist broken. However, it can be mitigated with one of the front-end shells. Choices, choices...
