    reinstalling windows

    Hi everybody,

Having a problem that I posted to another forum and the kind folks there directed me to your site. I'm about ready to pull my hair out, and would be most grateful for any help you might be able to provide.

I just reinstalled Win98 from my (Gateway) restoration cd. I did a 'delete and reinstall', booting from the disk. I can get to the Windows Update, but not to the 'Product update' page. I get an error message that says I don't have ActiveX on my computer. My security settings are set on medium. I reinstalled Microsoft Virtual Machine from my disk that came with the computer, tried it again, still nothing. I don't even know what ActiveX is, much less how to find it.

    Many thanks in advance,

    Susan L

    Hi Susan:

Out of curiosity, what was the problem & how did you solve it?

    Hi Phil,

I had to reset internet security to low to get to the Windows update. You know the window that opens and says, 'this is from Microsoft, do you want to continue?' Well, my computer said it was from an 'unknown' source, unsigned and so on. That may be another problem to be reckoned with. One step forward...two steps back! Thanks again,

    Susan

I don't think you'd go far wrong if you added the Windows Update site to your Trusted Zone, where just about everything is Enabled.
