Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

I have a bunch of icons on my taskbar and they all work. I.e. when I click an icon it takes me to the correct place. Outlook, computer, realplayer, etc. all work except the desktop icon. When I click on that I get the window "Open With - Click the program you want to use to open the file 'SHELL32.DLL'." Do I have a problem with the shell32.dll file? What do I need to do to fix this? I just did Scandisc and Defrag but it still doesn't work.

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

    Hi Maria:

When you say icons on your taskbar, I assume you mean on the Quick Launch toolbar. Right click the "Show Desktop" icon & choose Properties. Does it point to

    "C:WINDOWSSYSTEMShow Desktop.scf"

If not, open Windows Explorer & browse to that file. Double click it. Does it close all open windows? If so, right click & drag it to the Quick Launch toolbar & delete the other icon that doesn't work.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

The file "C:WINDOWSSYSTEMShow Desktop.scf " does not appear when I right-click on Desktop icon properties. However, when I accidently pasted it to the "Target" (under Properties), it worked! So I guess the file is in my system somewhere. I couldn't find it in Explorer under Windows/System/Application Data so thank goodness for fortuitous accidents. I couldn't find any file that looked like Quick Launch or Show Desktop. Oh well.

    Thank you so much for your help!!! <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30>

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

    Hi Maria:

You're quite welcome. It turned out that your shortcut wasn't pointing to the right place, but I'm glad you got it fixed. FYI, the actual "Show Desktop" executable is not located in

    Windows/System/Application Data

It is located in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM, but you won't be able to see the extension. Also, you can find the Quick Launch toolbar in "C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick Launch".

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

Hi Phil, I found the Quick Launch under Windows/System/Application Data. However, I couldn't find the Show Desktop executable under Windows/System. I looked at all (I think) files under that but I couldn't find the words Show Desktop. Would you add the rest of the address(? path?) for future reference?

    Thanks again for your help.

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

    Hi Maria:

That is the full path: C:windowssystem is the folder that "Show Desktop.scf" is in. I'm not sure why you can't find it. When you go to WindowsSystem folder, do you have everything shown in alphabetical order? If so, you show be able to single click any file, then type "sho" (w/o quotes) real quick, & see the icon. It looks like a desktop.

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

    Thanks, Phil.

I couldn't find exactly what you said so I'm writing down what I found in Explorer under Windows/system:

    System
    Backup
    Color
    DirectX
    -Dinput
    -Migrate
    Iosubsystem
    Macromed
    -Common
    -Director
    -Flash
    -Shockwave
    -Shockwave 8
    -Update
    Mui
    -Lots of 4 digit numbers
    Oobe
    -Error
    -HTML
    -Images
    -Msn
    -Msnerror
    -Msnhtml
    -Msnsetup
    -Passport
    -Setup
    Quick Time
    Sfp
    Shellext
    Viewers
    Vmm32
After this comes a folder that says system 32.
Am I in the right place? (Sorry I took so long to respond!)

Re: Taskbar desktop icon doesn't go to desktop

    Hi Maria:

    Do this:
    1. Click an empty spot on the taskbar & press F3.
    2. Make sure that the look in box is your primary hard drive & that "include subfolders" is ticked.
    3. Type "show desktop.*" in the "named" box & search. Include the quotes.
    4. Press Find

What you should see is Show Desktop in C:WindowsSystem
What kaplinb is referring to is the shortcut in C:WINDOWSApplication DataMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick LaunchShow Desktop.lnk

However, it will still show up without the .lnk extension, but if you look at the type column, you'll see it's a shortcut.
