    Free search software

I am looking for free software that will search for a word, term, phrase, string, whatever within files. I looked briefly at Copernic but it is somewhat convoluted and ultimately is NOT free. I previously had such a program but lost it in a disastrous HDD crash and my onboard memory cannot resurrect what it was. I use Search Everything to instantly locate files but it does not have the capability of looking within the files. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I've used Agent Ransack for that purpose for a number of years, reasonably quick on the first search of a session, very fast on subsequent searches. http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack

What OS? From Vista on you can use Windows Search very effectively.

Joe- I am using Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601). I am familiar with Windows Search but have not been to happy with it.
