If you just close Skype it remains running in the background. Have you exited Skype rather than just closed it?

Thank you yes I exited skype, but I am still shown as online to my contacts. Even when I manually select offline it shows off line on my PC but is still showing online to my conntacts. The only way I can get it to change is to select invisible, it then shows off line to my contact.
Thank you for any help you can suggest.

    Hi
Yes I do I unistalled as completely as I could and down loaded the latest version. All the indications when I change status are correct on my PC but to my contacts they still see me online. This seems to affect a lot of people as I found on the web but nobody has the answer why. All my contacts have no problems like this? I am considering restoring back to a time before this started to see if that works
What do you think of that?

A restore might work. Before that, double check all your Skype settings to make sure you have not enabled anything like "notifications when Skype is not active" or something similar.

    Hi
I checked the settings and they were all OK. After trying everything I could think of I got nowhere.
I then opened a new account with different name password etc and that appears to be the answer it is working properly now.
Thank you very much for your help it is much appreciated.

If ANY of the device(s), cell phone, laptop, tablet, ... is/are logged on to the same Skype username account, your Skype will be reported as active.

In my case my Skype is forever active even if all my devices are all powered off; because I use Skype for landline phone (with a phone number). Obviously to receive landline phone calls using ordinary phones, my Skype username must be always active.

Remote case: Someone is using your Skype username, such as hackers.
More likely, these people are using it: Your spouse/boy,girl friend/your kids/your out-of-home college kids.

I ran into the same problem with skype, some of my friends were asking me why I was not replying to thier queries on skype as I was showing to be online when I wasn't, turns
out it was my Panasonic Smart TV. If you login to Skype on the TV, it keeps you online 24/7. Had to unlog from the TV skype. Couldn't find a way to uninstall it from the
    TV.

    Hi
I never thought of that I do have skype on my TV but I am not sure if I have ever used it.
A new account has solved my problem so I will make sure I don't use the TV just in case.
    Thank you for that.

Are any of you only using desktop Skype? If so, it's strange that you're seeing this issue, which is a mobile-related one created by recent back-end changes in Skype's infrastructure to support offline messaging and better syncing. It's supposed to be fixed/improved at some point, but it could be some time given the speed with which Skype moves. The problem is described in this thread, in this message in particular:
    http://community.skype.com/t5/Securi...ht/true#M28546

On the Android side, at least, a version from last year (3.2.0.6673) nicely works around the problem.
