OrgPlus

Has anyone ever compared Visio with OrgPlus?

I have been using OrgPlus for creating organization charts. I have just upgraded our computer and trying to re-load OrgPlus we have found that the disk (3 1/2 inch floppy) has been corrupted.

Should we buy another copy of OrgPlus or go for Visio?

Our org charts are reasonably complex and we want to be able to enter the salaries for each position in a workgroup and then have the total salaries for the workgroup be rolled up and appear in the box representing the workgroup manager. Can this be done in Visio?

    Thanks.

Org charts are just one of the capabilities of Visio. If that's all you need, you might as well upgrade OrgPlus.

If you think you might like to document your network as well, get Visio. If you want to create org charts with hot links so you could click on a supervisor's box and drill down to another chart with his team detailed, and drill down from there to individual information, go Visio. If you want to store the salary level or other information for each person in the diagram itself, where you can reference it for other purposes or can display it as data, go Visio.

Thanks for your advice, Charlotte. I think I will give Visio a run, then.

One further question: I suppose that the documentation that comes with Visio will be as sparse as all other MS documentation. Can you advise on a good book on Visio? It can be advanced - I'm not a beginner in using MS products or PC software in general. But I would like a guide on how to use the full power of Visio.

    Thanks

Actually, Visio help is pretty good. Since the 2000 version was already well along with Microsoft acquired control over it, it hasn't been sucked into HTML help yet, and you can still find things in it. I've been working with Visio since it was first introduced in the early 90s, so I haven't really looked at the books on it. Maybe someone else will jump in with a recommendation.

I've been using the Visio 2000 Bible by Mark H Walker (IDG Books). It's comprehensive if not always totally clear. But it's probably the best around.

The Amazon reference is here .

Perhaps it might be best, though, to run with Charlotte's suggestion and check out Visio Help first before you outlay the money.
