Windows Explorer Has Encountered a Problem

Why do I get all of the weird problems?

I have been using XP Home since October 26th (format HD, install Win98, install XP home). For the past week or so I get an intermittent "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry (right!) for the inconvenience." message, and the toolbar and Start Menu reset themselves.

It usually happens when I change or move an item on the Start Menu, but it has also happened when I close app windows, or sometimes just click on a button in a window. It seems to be happening more and more often lately.

I have removed everything possible from the startup areas. The only processes that are running are those that XP starts. It seems to be a random event--I can't replicate it by any one action or sequence of actions.

I have searched the MS KB and haven't found anything close. Has anyone else had this problem? I'd really appreciate some advice.

    John

Check your drive for errors, then defragment it.
The fastest way to check it for errors, click Start, then Run, type
    chkdsk /f
and hit Enter. You will get the message it will be done after restart, so do it. Then run Disk Defragmenter (All Programs | Accessories | System Tools).
I hope it will solve the problem.

Yep, I've been having that problem too on both of my Pc's. After a few re-starts or normal shutdowns it goes away until we load / re-load new software. Not a major prob. at all though, but it is irritating.

Very good...thank you. Your suggestion seems to have fixed the problem for the most part. I did get the message one time since then though, when I was dragging things around in the start menu. It seems to get confused when you drag and drop too fast.

One question though--do you have an explanation as to why chkdsk and defrag fixed that type of problem? Just curious. Anyway...thanks again.
