Can not write to desktop (sort of)

    The problem:
If the user saves a file using Word, Adobe Acrobat, etc. to the desktop the action completes. However the file is not visible on the desktop. Using the File Explorer you can see and open the file from the desktop directory.

If the user tries to create a folder on the desktop directly, he will get a new folder Icon and the words new folder--however, he will be unable to rename the folder from New Folder. He will also get an error message when he tries to delete the folder.

The user is on a domain, and I have tried giving him both User rights and domain admin rights. I have not set any group policies.

The user is currently running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

You can try restoring the default folder location if they have been specifically manipulated in the past. (knowingly or unwittingly)
    DRIVE IMAGING
Invest a little time and energy in a well thought out BACKUP regimen and you will have minimal down time, and headache.

Thanks I'll give that a try, but I have my doubts. This was a fresh "out of the box" install as it was a brand new machine from Dell.

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I was out of town. The error message is as follows:
    Could not find this item
This item is no longer located in c:\users\stu.art\desktop
Verify the item's location and try again.

    New Folder
    Date created 3/18/2014 1:30p.m.

Hope this helps. I have never seen anything this bizarre.

Right click on the New Folder icon and select Properties.
    Click on the Security tab
What is the path listed after Object Name and what are the permissions when you click on his user name.

For reference, here's what I get when I create an new folder on the desktop:
