    XP & Works Suite 2001

I want to buy an another Dell computer. At the moment they are offering (1) XP Home Edition with Works Suite 2001 or (2) XP Home Editon with Office XP Small Business Editon. The configuration # 1 is a lot cheaper then the configuration #2. However, looking itno the problems posted in 'DellTalk' in relation to the programs in configuration #1 are considerable. My question is how serious are these problems. I will appreciate if you kind people give me your expert opinions on the configuration of #1. I am not very good at computer technology and if the problems are really serious then I am willing to go for configuration #2.

Re: XP & Works Suite 2001

All I would say is that if the hardware is the same, then the difference in price is the difference between Office and Works. Although Works is fine for simple tasks, Office is a much superior suite if you have to use it a lot.

Unfortunately, from what I hear and read, Office 2002 is not an improvement over Office 2000. (There may be other opinions). On advice from my IT manager, I have not upgraded to 2002.

Re: XP & Works Suite 2001

    Many thanks for your response.

I am not sure but they have two systems called Dimension 4300 (intel 845E chipset and SDRAM memory) and Dimension 8200 (at higher level intel 850 chipset and RDRAM memory) but both having the choices of configurations #1 & #2 as described in my post. I have a choice to take all others items same for both systems except XP & Works 2001 or XP & XP Office for SBE. You are right and I am in agreement with you but it is difficult to know what percentage of price increase is for Works suite 2001. I have no problem in going for Works suite 2001 as I don't have to use Office a lot. In fact, my use of Office would be very little.

I am concern about the conflicts (if any) between all programs in Works Suite 2001 and Windows XP Home Edition.

The difference between Works and SBE is mainly that SBE contains Excel, whose price is about $US99. SBE contains lots of small business templates also, whereas Works contains lots of homey/crafty stuff.

The Dell 8200 is a hefty business chassis with 24/7 duty cycle, whereas the 4300 is a lightweight box. For home use, the 4300 is plenty adequate. If you have no demanding use for Excel, you probably can save $100 by electing Works.

In either case, you will get good stuff. No need to worry about either hardware or software. Your concern for conflicts is totally unwarranted, as long as you do not load some obsolete Office product on top of the OEM.

Jim, many thanks for the information. They are having holiday and non-holiday packages at the moment. Non-holiday is with SBE and holiday package is with Works but the price difference is negligible. In that case, I will go for 4300 with SBE.
