    Windows Update - Windows 7

I am having a continued problem with Windows Update and it seems like I am one of many. I am running Windows 7 home premium service pack 1 on a

    HP h8-1202, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz with 8.00 GM of ram. Operating system 64 bit.

Whenever I try to run it, it will run for hours and not finish. I have tried numerous fixes from chat rooms and Microsoft sights, including "Fixit" from Microsoft. When it finishes which is rarely, it finds problems but will not fix them.

On shutdown almost every night for the last 6 or 8 weeks it says installing update 1 of 1. Checking the update history it is always KB2676562. Each time it says it is successful.

The only error message that comes up is 80080005. One suggestion was to run :chkdsk c: /f /r which took over 5 hours and found no problems.

Microsoft Security Essentials also has trouble updating. I do it manually using the following link.

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=87341.

It would be nice if there was a similar link to Windows Update but I can not find one.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum Chris,

Step 4 in http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/w...-update-issues has the same remedial steps for that update failing to install, although is slightly different to the successful install that you are getting, but MSE and the update problem could be related.

Apologies if you have already tried these steps.

I would run the "sfc /scannow" command, and let it finish.

If the above doesn't do the trick, preform a no reformat, non destructive install.
    Win7′s no-reformat, nondestructive reinstall

Ensure you have image based backups in the future.
    DRIVE IMAGING
Invest a little time and energy in a well thought out BACKUP regimen and you will have minimal down time, and headache.

Build your own system; get everything you want and nothing you don't.
    Latest Build:

EVGA GTX980, Seasonic PLATINUM-1000W PSU, MountainMods U2-UFO Case, and 7 other internal drives.
