Thanks for the suggestion Leif (oops - edited typo here)

Hey they provide us with all the latest stuff here - Dell PC running Windows 95, Dell QuietKey Keyboard. The only thing really hi-tech here is my Logitech cordless mouse (purchased myself).

Alt Gr + 4 rings a nice bell, but I already knew how to do that! Alt +4 = same bell, Alt Gr + Shift + 4 = A familiar sounding bell, Alt + Shift + 4 = a increasingly frustrating bell.

The IT guys here used a 'patch' to let me 'see' the

Re: Testing

Hi Sammy;

Thanks for the suggestion but I think I am in mode at the moment. I have the patch installed - the problem is that the patch works differently in every application!

In Word I assigned a shortcut key to insert the euro symbol into docs, in Outlook I have to use Alt 0128 (In word Alt 0128 also works but only if the Num Lock is on - In Outlook it doesn't matter). And in IE (5.50+++) nothing seems to work! In Excel I get the euro as default if I change my settings in the control panel. I don't want it as the default since I'm not in Euroland but Alt 0128 (avec NumbLoc) seems to work but then the cell is handled as text not a number !

I'm sure if I was running XP or something entirely modern and user friendly I would not have these problems. My IT department says they could upgrade me to W98 but there very busy and that's a lot of work for such a little return!

Thanks for the help but

Re: Testing

Sorry that didn't help. I seem to be in worse shape on this machine: can't find a euro in any application and this is a WIN 2K / Office 2K machine. Since they won't give me Admin priviledges, I can only say, sombody's not doing their job.

Just to rub salt in the wound, the attached shows the choice I get in Excel.

Can you not do a custom format? This works here:

PS, did you notice that the image "MS supports the euro" in Leif's reply was actually a link to MS's answer for everything pertaining to the euro? I had just thought that it was a joke!

Re: Testing

As a good lounger I checked out that link (Thanks Leif!) and discovered that there are 12 countries in Euroland! Funny - I thought 21 countries (and overseas Territories) will actually use the Euro. . European countries like Andora, Monaco, San Marino and let's not forget - the Vatican will be turning in their Spanish Potatoes, Froggy Francs and Liras on 1 Jan! You will find euros in the Caribbean, in South America, in the Indian Ocean and, believe it or not, a few kms off the coast of Newfoundland.

But I image those guys are in the 21st century and are using a modern operating system!

Leif
Thanks for checking but my version of Excel doesn't show the Euro in this box (even if I change my default under the control panel) It's Excel 97 and either I don't have the right update or ??? - but I'm not surprised as my version shows the correct code for the Swiss franc (CHF) only under Liechtenstein (which does use it) but not under Switzerland ...

Yes - I'm afraid I wasn't seriously expecting you to get the choice (you wouldn't be asking in the first place) - I just wanted to show you what you were missing!

Does the custom format not do part of what you want?

Re: Testing

Leif & Sammy

Many thanks for all your help. I suppose I will get use to all this kludge - arn't computers supposed to make life easier? So let's see if I can remember, In excel use custom formatting, in word do ctrl-shift-4, in outlook its alt-0128, don't bother in ie 'cause it doesn't work. At home (Office 2K+1 for Mac) its different again but at least the same keystrokes in all the applications - including ie.

I figure by 2010 I'll have XP at the office and this will all be history!
