Lock Up / Running PC Issue

On my laptop, I run Windows 7. I predominantly use Firefox browser and Outlook email. Also use Open Office.

For some reason, on occasion the PC locks up and it just runs and runs (hourglass never disappears).
Although I hate doing this, I sometimes have to remove the battery and then reboot. In the majority of cases, this works.
Sometimes I am asked to run chkdsk after doing this.

The lock up is not a regular occurance, but it happens often enough. What do you think may be doing this ?
Is there a better way to try to shut down the PC when this happens?

    Thanks for your help.

To shut down - try holding the power button in for 5 seconds.

Is this a recent occurrence? Did it start after installing updates, new software, or new hardware?

Have you tried having Task Manager running to see if you can identify what is taking over?

First, use the hard disk diagnostics utility from your hard disk's manufacturer to check the state of your hard disk.
