    Can't merge cells (Word 2000 (9.0.3821, SR-1))

I have a form (table) with many cells, some of them merged to create column headings. I have two cells that I want to merge, but Word won't let me. I select the two adjacent cells, then right-click. In the context menu, "merge cells" is grayed-out. What circumstances cause "merge cells" not to work? Word's Help file is characteristically unhelpful, and my $40 five-pound book on Word isn't helping either.

Are the two exactly the same size? I believe that if they are not EXACTLY the same height you won't be able to merge them.
    hope that helps

    Hi Lucas:

The result of the merged cells must be a rectangle; otherwise you cannot merge.

    Hope this helps.
