Question Can't locate new update for MSE on Microsoft website

A new update showed up a couple of days ago for Microsoft Security Essentials, however this update does not show up on their website and I'm unable to find any info in a quick google search. The update number is KB 2949786 and it updated MSE from version 4.4.304.0 to version 4.5.216.0. I've never been unable to locate info on an update at their website. Anyone know why I can't find this anywhere? Even the MSE download page doesn't have the newer version.

Have you tried just reinstalling MSE as that may give you the newer version ?

    Hello Hihomumio:

MSEPrereleaseInstall will get you version 4.5.212.0 and perhaps Windows Update will bring you up to 4.5.216.0 with luck.

Like Sudo15, my theory is that even if you installed version 4.4, Windows Update would bring you up to version 4.5 - FWIW.

    Cheers

There are comments here (and elsewhere) that 4.5.216.0 is thus far only available via Windows Update: Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) 4.5.216.0 Released

(I think your KB number should end in 7, not 6: KB2949787)

If you install this version on XP you will get a permanent yellow notification tray icon: Microsoft Security Essentials 4.5.216.0 Potentially Unprotected on Windows XP

Sudo15, I uninstalled then reinstalled through Windows update...but that newer version was no where to be found going by KB 2949786.

Thanks BruceR. The update did show up via Windows update. I had problems trying to get it to install on two machines, it failed after about 10-15 mins of trying to install. I decided to go looking around for info to see if others were having a problem with the update and that was when I wasn't able to find anything about it. Interestingly enough, I re-checked the KB number based on what you said....and it's definitely KB2949786 on both and both are Win 7. I wasn't aware there was another KB number for this update but regardless, when I checked thru Microsoft, I couldn't find a newer version of MSE. I ended up having to uninstall the version I had and then reinstalled via Windows update. That worked for both the pc and the laptop.

no Bruce. neither 7 nor 6 worked as of right now - KB2949786 and KB2949787 lead to dead ends on the Microsoft support site saying those pages are no longer available.

but you're right about installing MSE version 4.5.216.0 under Windows XP as it will give the "unprotected" status on there. XP users should AVOID upgrading or installing 4.5.216 of MSE at all costs and stick to using version 4.4.304.

You might want to consider uninstalling MSE and going to the free versions of AVG, Avira, or Avast. They provide higher rated protection than MSE although you may have to put up with an occasional ad. I haven't used it in along time but Avast Free used to require you to re register every year.

I typically go with Avast for those who want something for free.
