    Windows 8.1 update available

Windows 8.1 update will be available through Windows Update on April 8. If you have a TechNet or MSDN subscription you may download it now.

One of the fixes which is part of this update is a cumulative update. Here is a quote from the KB article:

"Important All future security and nonsecurity updates for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 require this update to be installed. We recommend that you install this update on your Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2-based computer in order to receive continued future updates."

See Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Update April, 2014.

For those still using Windows 8: One can get Windows 8.1 Update from the Microsoft Store then apply the Windows 8.1 Update 1. With Microsoft's naming scheme the names are important to note.

In watching the keynote of the Build conference it was referred to as "Windows 8.1 update". That is how it named on MSDN too. Windows 8.1 is just called Windows 8.1.

The TechNet download site is currently the busiest I have ever seen it. There must be a massive demand by subscribers to get this "update"!!! Why such urgency?

Historically there has always been a flurry of downloading when something new comes out. Same happens in stores when a new product is announced and people desire it.
