Mark as Read bug

Eileen: There may be a bug somewhere that is causing fora to be marked as read when they should not. I just had a forum that I have never visited marked as read. I went to the Word forum and read several messages. WHen I exited the forum message index I clicked on "Mark forum as Read" button to mark the remaining messages which I had not read. When I got back to the Main menu, I noticed that the Access forum, which I have never visited, did not show any unread messages. I clicked on Access and sure enough, the forum index showed all messages as read. I know that it did show unread messages before I went to the Word forum. There is at one other forum that I have never visited that now shows no unread messages, but I do not know when that happened.

A couple of other possibly related observations. First, this weekend I accessed the lounge for the first time from my system at home. This morning, I am back on my office machine. Could that possibly have anything to do with this? Second, ever since I started using the new lounge, I had noticed that the number of unread messages in fora that I have never visited did not equal the total number of messages. I have thought that was odd, but didn't put any importance on it. Could that be connected?

My home system is Win 98 and Netscape 4.76, my office system is Win 2K and IE 5.5.

Re: Mark as Read bug

Re your observations:
A couple of things I have noticed:
1] if you go into a forum, do not read any messages, then exit the forum, the 'unread' message counter on the main index is reset. I tend to view it as a 'new-since-I-last-checked' indicator. If you go back into the forum, individual unread messages are still marked as unread.
2] if the number of 'unread' messages is greater than the total number of messages, this may be due to the 'unread' counter being increased when a message is edited.
Does that make sense?

I think we may have to lose the MarkRead hack -it's more trouble than its worth.

Leif: What you say may make sense, but it does not apply in this case. In the fora I was talking about, I had never visited the forum in any way, not even to check anything. Where the unread count is different from the total, it is always less, usually much less.

If it really is causing these kinds of problems, and it can't be fixed, then I can live without it. However, I do find it useful.

I dont really mind too much about the Mark as read button. I don't use it.

However I do find it annoying to go into a forum, read some of the posts, come out of the forum and then find all the posts in that forum I haven't read are marked as read.

That happens when you use Flat mode. If you don't want it to happen, use Threaded mode.

Re: Mark as Read real bug

I'm glad David raised this one - this happens to me all the time (and it is a behavior that's different from Ye OL).

The Word forum may have say, 25 new messages, and I've only got time to pop on for a quick look at a couple. When I come back a couple of hours later, everything is marked as read, so I have to figure out what's not read by looking at the time for each msg, no fun!

The kicker is, I do have it set to Threaded mode.

Re: Mark as Read real bug

I went into Palm. I read three threads, I am in threaded mode. Then i used the triangle to get back to the paln index, then to get back to the main index. The red number had now disappeared. I went back into palm and the things I had not read were still orange. I used the triangle to get back to the main index and then closed IE. I then went back into the Lounge. went to the main index, and to the palm. Now everything is yellow.

Is it because I did not log off but just closed IE?

No! I tried the same procedure on the PP forum. Then I logged out and in again (No need to close IE) and when I get to the PP forum it is all yellow.

Same thing happens to me. I now (sometimes) jot down the topic of the next unread message (going from bottom up), so I know where to start when I come back.

Still this board is heads & shoulders above other boards.

Well I'd never realised it before, but you're quite right. I just went over to wwwthreads to see if the problem has been solvedin the latest version but discovered it is still there! So... I've put in a bug report and let's hope Scream comes up withe the answer.

Thanks for so carefully tracking the steps needed to reproduce. I passed them on to Scream exactly as you mapped them.
