    Screen saver

It seems that the assignment of my .SCR file extension has been changed from screensaver to another program. I know how to change file type assignments in Windows Explorer but I don't know what program name to re-assign the .SCR type to. If I browse, I don't know what I'm looking for!! Anyone have an idea? If I need to make changes to the registry, I'm OK with that. I just don't know where to look.

    Thanks in advance.

To fix this problem, you will need to take a few steps.

Depending on which versiojn of Windows you have, and whether or not the Internet Explorer desktop update has been installed, this might be a little different - so consider this a guideline.

    1) Open Windows Explorer. Usually it's in your Start Menu somewhere, under Programs.

    2) In the menu bar, select Tools -> Options.

    3) Click on the tab that reads "File Types".

    4) In the list that appears, use your arrow keys and scroll through the list of registered file types and look for something with the extension SCR. When you find it, delete the entry (as long as it is not Screen Saver).

If you have trouble with it or just feel like installing a patch, I have exported a REG file that you can double click on to restore the file type. If you opt to do so, remember to back up the registry first....practice safe computing! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Screen saver

    Mark,

Thank you for the response. In reading my original message, I realize I wasn't very clear. I am familiar with changing the file type associations, that's not the problem. The .SCR file type says "screen saver" in the folder options menu but when I double click a .SCR file the system tries to open it with Microsoft Faxview (as it says under "open with"), and of course it can't - it's not a fax style file. So, even though the .SCR file is a "screen saver" file according to the folder options box it seems to be actually associated with MS Fax.

What I need to do is change the executable that is used to "open with". But I don't know what program to tell hte system to use (or how to change the "open with" program) so that it no longer uses "FAXVIEW" but rather the default screensaver program.

    Any ideas??

    Re: Screen saver

If you view the file's options in explorer, what do you see listed? You should have only test, install, and configure as options in that dialog box. If there is an entry for 'opens with' delete whatever is there. That should effectively solve the problem since a screen saver SCR file is an executable all by itself.

The ZIP file I uploaded with my original reply should reset the default for you - you can try that if you want, or manually edit the options from explorer's File Types dialog.
