Question How to get .pdf files to 'preview' in Windows 8.1 Explorer ?

Have searched here and there but haven't found a solution to this (necessary) preview functionality in Windows 8.1 Explorer(not Metro), like was possible in Windows 7.
Not Metro (don't know if that needs to be specified)

I've tried "PDF Previewer for Windows 8" but it seems to be limited to PDFs that are 'wrappers' for images (PDFs created exclusively from image files)

    many tia

Do you not have Adobe reader or better yet PDF-Xchange viewer?

I use FoxIT reader and during the install it prompts to have the add-on for viewing PDFs installed for various browsers. It may also try to install some PUSS (potentially unwanted sordid software) so a custom install with careful reading along the way is always called for if chosen.

I second FoxIT reader for 8.1. It works well enough for reading PDF files within Windows explorer & most any browser.

Nitro PDF Reader also installs a working PDF previewer.

thanks - i've installed Nitro previously, but was put off by the huge number of ancillary apps/features - it just seemed too intrusive, but i didn't attempt to uninstall/re-install with a bare-bones installation, so it may have been that i just didn't pay attention to all the installation configuration subtleties.
