Have you checked the manufacturer's site for updated software?

Now i see that HP doesn't offer Full Feature software for my model scanner, just a basic driver which is what i downloaded before. maybe i ought to buy a new scanner if i want to scan pdf docs.

If there is a Windows 7 version of the software you may be able to get it to work. HP is notorious for not updating drivers and software for new versions of Windows. Unfortunately, buying a new scanner may be your only option.

No need to buy a new scanner. Download and install the following scanning software. It works flawlessly in Windows 8.0, and I'm sure it will also work in Windows 8.1.

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/naps2/

NAPS2 is free, and it is extremely simple to use. You can easily scan to a multipage PDF or to JPG.

    Here is their description:

NAPS2 is a document scanning application with a focus on simplicity and ease of use. Scan your documents from WIA- and TWAIN-compatible scanners, organize the pages as you like, and save them as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, and other file formats. Requires .NET Framework 4.0 or higher.
I downloaded and installed it. It took me about two minutes to figure out how to use it. It is superior software and not complicated in any way.

If you want to work hard, use the HP software. If you want to have an easy life, use NAPS2.

    Trust me, I've used both.

In fact, you can have both programs on the same computer, and use whichever one you want. There won't be any conflicts.

    You will quickly abandon HP.

NAPS2 is a nice simple program, but it scans the document as an image file. It would be a much better application if it handled OCR.

Thanks for the heads up on NAPS. It's better than the Canon software too. We like how you can scan a batch in the ADF and then scan some more before acting on that batch.

One thing I can't quite figure out how to do is configure a profile for doublesided on the ADF. There's a choice to pull from the "Duplexer" but that doesn't work. I'll keep playing with it, and it's not a dealbreaker since we can have it present the dialog box to manually adjust it.

Good ole HP & driver issues, again. Yep, you have no other choice but, to buy a new unit. Maybe not HP this time.
