Another alternative...

Just use it to reset the 'Unread Counter' and leave the Icon coloring logic unchanged. That way I can eliminate those 'nagging' red numbers on the Main Index and I don't feel so overwhelmed with the number of posts I am behind.

I believe that's what it's supposed to be doing now...
(I've never really understood how it works! )

Re: Vote in the MarkRead button

I just did a quick test and it appears to mark all posts as read (icons changed to yellow)in addition to reseting the unread counter on the Main Index. (Maybe the Unread Counter just counts the orange icons???)

I picked a board I'm not following (Windows NT)from the Main Index (unread counter = 139); checked to see that there were lots of orange icons; used the 'Mark Board as Read' process; went back to the Main Index (unread counter now zero - or at least not displayed); went back into the board and all posts had yellow icons.

At any rate, it's useful enough that I added another 'Keep' vote to your poll.

Thanks,

<big>PLEASE</big> keep the button. It's the only way I can keep my sanity!

Do you know how hard it is to keep up on the WORD and EXCEL forums? I simply browse through, read what I want, and then mark the rest as read.

So please mummy....<big><font color=448800>KEEP THE BUTTON</font color=448800></big>

Re: Vote in the MarkRead button

I have found that If I use the Netscape 4.75 Preference (under EDIT menu) then ADVANCED, CACHE, "DOCUMENT IN CACHE IS COMPARED TO DOCUMENT ON NETWORK" and select "EVERY TIME" seem to get acceptable updating of the status of the forum.

I wonder what others may get from this change?

That's one of the settings that is documented in the Newsflash: Optimum Browser Settings for Using these Boards.

That one didn't work right.
Here's a better one:
<FORM METHOD=POST ACTION="http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/dopoll.pl"><INPUT TYPE=HIDDEN NAME="pollname" VALUE="980824881Eileen">What shall we do with the MarkRead button?
<INPUT TYPE=RADIO NAME=option VALUE="1"> Kill - it's too buggy
<INPUT TYPE=RADIO NAME=option VALUE="2"> Keep - it's useful in spite of its warts
<INPUT TYPE=RADIO NAME=option VALUE="3"> I really don't care!
<INPUT TYPE=SUBMIT NAME="PollSubmit" VALUE="Submit vote"></FORM>

I don't like this one. It only lets me vote once.

Hey, Guys... I resemble that remark!

And Dave, it's Floriduh. We're very sensitive about these things. Particularly after being voted "off the island" on some cable channel's American History Quiz (I'm not joking about that). The Conch Republic may make all the noise it wants about secession, but the Keys don't speak for the rest of Florida.

Ian... keep trying man, where there's a will, there's a way! (smug cool guy)

Re: Vote in the MarkRead button

I protest. There's no way to enter a write in candidate. The choices are far too simple--not enough chance to appeal after the election is over. How do we really know all the votes have been counted? There's no absentee ballots that can come in when the election is over. There's no instructions on how to select the options. I tried punching the little holes but I don't think I punched hard enough--what if the little dots don't go through--will you still be able to determine my intent.
