Header deleted when text deleted from page (Word 2002)

Hi,

Attached is a document containing headers and footers. I am having a major usability problem with the deletion of text from the page content. If the user highlights the text in the main page by clicking within the left margin and then deletes, the entire header is also deleted.

Does anybody know how to prevent this?

Also, why is it that when the user presses 'Enter' after the 'test' text, the cursor does not move to the next line?

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks,

Chris

Click Show/Hide on the Word toolbar (the button that looks like a paragraph mark) You will see that after each line of text there is a section break.
1. If you click in the right margin and delete the line then you are also deleting the section break (that you can't see if you do not have Show/Hide button selected.)
2. When you press ENTER once, it does not go to a new line because of that section break (I can't tell you why, I just know that it works like that.) If you press ENTER a second time you will go to the next line.

I hate working with section breaks so I'm sure others can help you in working with them and why they act as they do... but I hope this helps!
have fun

Hi,

It seems like KT has pretty much given the info you need.
Just to embroider on that:

If there is a hidden text font property applied to some or all of the document, and which is messing things up, you should remove that hidden text font property by selecting the entire document, going to Format > Font, and ensuring that there is no checkmark (not even a grayed-out one), next to Hidden.

Also, take care not to delete those section breaks - the reason the header content is disappearing is that the section breaks "hold" the header/footer information including any text. So if you delete a section break, any header/footer content that was held in that section break, will be deleted as well.

Hi Chris,

there might be no easy solution for your problem. I think in every case with different headers/footers you need section breaks.
Which means in the document
1. you have to include section breaks for every page with different headers and
2. urge users not to delete them.
I think there is no way to protect the section breaks from deleting. One way around could be to use forms and allow user only to fill in fields and protect the rest.

If you would only need a different header on the first page, it is very easy.
In that case you tick the different first page option and afterwards insert a normal page break before you create different headers for the first and the following pages. When you are finished with your creation, you can delete the page break and save. The different first header will stay and the header for the following pages will be hidden, but stored.
Once a user will reach the second page, the different header will appear.
Sorry, this is not a real solution for your problem.

Good luck

Re: Header deleted when text deleted from page (Word 2002)

Chris:

One area of concern in this document is the lack of an end of paragraph mark <Enter> at the end of each paragraph. The way you have it now, the Section Break is part of the sentence, and will thus take on the attributes of the paragraph it is in. So if you put in a hard return at the end of your paragraphs, you will have text and a section break. This will also help with typing in the document.

Hope this helps.

A section break does not substitute for an end of paragraph mark (which is what is inserted when you press the Enter key).

Test2, attached, is your document with properly inserted paragraph marks. I also reformatted your footers.

What is going on with all the section breaks? Putting a section break in a document is comparable to "minor" surgery. You should do it when you need to, otherwise, not. In this case, you could get by with two sections. Test3.doc attached shows how to do this by using a StyleRef field in the header.

Header/footer information is kept in the section break mark. If there is only one section in a document, this doubles as the last paragraph mark in the document.

You could also benefit by using the Author and Title fields in Document properties and referencing these in your header.

Hi Charles,

Thanks very much for the time you have spent replying to my post I am completely new to using Word for this purpose, so it is much appreciated.

I have attached a somewhat trimmed down version of the document I attached earlier. If you could take a look at it I would be most grateful. I have taken your advice, and the Title, Author, ISBN and On Sale fields of the header are now populated at run-time using custom document properties.

I am still a little unclear, however, as to how to format the section breaks. If a user enters some text onto the same line as the section break, then selects and deletes it, I lose the entire header. I tried inserting a page break, but this forces the section break onto the next page.

If you could help me with the formatting of this document I would really appreciate it

Thanks again for your help
