    Question Passord reset disk

I created a password reset disk using a thumb drive, and after opening the file on the thumb drive, it was all encoded, (gibberish), naturally.
My question is if I have to use this thumb drive to reset my admin password, what is the process? It is not clear on that point. Same in the Windows 7 all-in-one for Dummies manual, written by Woody Leonhard. Can any one answer this please.
