Task Pane in Word XP (Word XP)

I have been using Word XP on a Windows XP machine and have found the task pane quite useful. The problem I have is that the task pane doesn't open when I open a new document or a saved document (I have to manually open it everytime).
I do have the tick in the box next to Show at Startup and I don't have Adobe Acrobat on the machine.
Can someone please give me an idea of what to try next?

I think that's the default. Even with my task pane displayed, when I open a saved document or create a new, blank document, is disappears.

Is there a way to change this default so it's always open / available?
    Thanks.

There are a couple of ways around this. For details see <post#=183773>post 183773</post#>

Thanks. I saw this but was hoping for something a little easier (not involving VBA or working with registry).
