Cleaning up May's Windows and Office updates

    By Susan Bradley

May updates proved mercifully uneventful; though one update caused some headlines for Hyper-V deployments, .NET Framework and Office updates were generally well-behaved. Unfortunately, the now notorious Windows 8.1 Update (KB 2919355) still is causing problems, and there seems to be no end in sight.

On the POS Update trick, it's worth noting that not only is MS not testing POS updates on a standard build but the security needs for a POS system are quite different. POS systems are usually either on a dedicated network or locked down in various ways. They're not designed for surfing but are more Kiosk mode. Thus the kind of thing MS will be updating is not the kind of thing you'll need for general web surfing. And it may indeed break some of that. Bad idea.

For computers which do not meet the hardware requirements to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, Linux Mint is a possibility. Desktop Linux really isn't as hard to use as it was even two years ago.
