    Printing pages (2000/SE-1)

On a spreadsheet that I have used for months - I am now having a print setup/preview/output problem. Spreadsheet has about 45 columns - 20 of which are used for the print range. Recently added 2 new columns that are included in the print range, but pages will not break correctly.

Other details (which may or may not be pertinant)
    - the first six rows are repeated as Print Titles
    - Print title includes a very small graphic (company logo)
    - the data has between 500-1500 lines to print (Data uses subtotals which end user may collapse or expand)
    - Spreadsheet end user can choose to manually hide 2-6 columns of the print range depending on his/her needs. I mention this because one of the suggestions might be to manually scale the output (Using the PAGE tab on the Page Setup dialog) - but I have tried that and it does not work. Even if it did work; a fixed, manually scaled Adjustment % might not produce an acceptable output. If a user decided to hide some columns the printed version would no longer "fill" the page (horizontally), for example.

Problem. In Print Preview I see a tiny page with what appears to be an area maybe 10 rows by 8 columns in the center of the page (almost as if the margins were set at 3" all around - or something). Zoom button is grayed out. Bottom left of the preview shows "Page 1 of 4100" - previously the printed version would be about 130 pages. I have tried selecting all different sizes of print ranges - with no luck. As soon as the print range exceeds 8 columns wide - old tiny page comes back to the print preview. (BTW, All my efforts at manipulating the Page Break preview end up with the error message that the scale will be below the 10% minimum).

Previous to this problem my routine would be to update the spreadsheet each month, reset the print range, reset the titles range, verify the scaling is set to "Fit to '1' page(s) wide by 'blank' tall" - and everything worked fine.

Please help me - I've been playing with this for hours.

IMHO and WADR your message is way too wordy and for anyone to take interest in it, well you need to give pertinent information about the problem. Once someone answers you then you will give the detailed info. Remember you need to describe the problem.

    OK try this.

    1) Format a new worksheet just like the one in question. Margins and column widths and scaling and what have you.
    2) Try and print the max and min amount of columns and see if you can.

Since you said that you added the two columns, did you adjust the print range and the print area and what have you?

Let me know what I can do to help you further.

    Re: Printing pages (2000/SE-1)

Sorry to have wasted anyone's time.

My mistake - trying to avoid the iterative types of answers that I often notice on these boards. Since I have used Excel for a LONG time and have never seen anything quite like the problem I am having, I decided - perhaps incorrectly - to include all of the factors that I thought possibly COULD contribute to the problem.

BTW, have opened the same file on another computer and everything looks fine. And now go back to the original computer and that updated file (as well as earlier pre-updated versions) [still] has the problem described in the original post.

Thanks for your advice about the original post - will keep that in mind in the future.

At the risk of confusing everyone, I thought your original post was exactly what was required! It eliminated one or two possible responses and gave a clear description of what your problem was. Anyway, has anything changed recently on your computer (especially printer drivers)? If you create a new workbook from scratch with more than 8 columns and the same print settings and preview it do you have the same sort of problem? Have you tried reinstalling the printer?

    Re: Printing pages (2000/SE-1)

The ONLY thing that has changed is that a second (45 GB) hard drive has been added in the last few days. Original hard drive is still there and the PC still boots from that original drive. Other details that may help.
    - Original computer (a PC) and the other computer (a laptop) mentioned previously are connected through a small hub to a corporate network
    - Original computer and the other computer both reside in my office
    - Printer is connected directly to the laptop docking station and is "shared" to the Original computer (through the network)
    - Even if another network printer is selected by the Original computer - the print/preview problem still shows up

Several spreadsheets that have since been created from scratch on the Original computer do NOT show this problem. (And the other peculiar thing I can't get over is that now all of the non-updated versions of this file now have this problem as well).

I attached a stripped down sample of the updated data. (Data changed to protect the innocent).

    Thanks.

    Hi,
The attachment didn't take - if you preview your reply, you need to reattach the file or it gets lost.

    Re: Printing pages (2000/SE-1)

    Problem has vanished.

Mentioned in my last post that even if another network printer is selected from the Original computer the problem still appears. Well, by accident I actually sent a print request (of the offending file) to another network printer. Luckily I was able to cancel it after only a few of the 4100 pages had spooled. I returned to the page view of the file; selected Print Preview and changed to the local-but-shared-printer connected to the laptop and what-do-you-know - everything is back to normal...

...and God bless us everyone ...

Thanks for all your help - sorry for the Wild Goose Chase... <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
