Tabs and Outlining in Word 2010

I'm not sure why I never dealt with, or had to deal with this before, but I do now.

I want to make an outline just "by hand." I want to be able to type in the coding (I, A, etc.) and then tab (or space 2) and then type. But Word has it's own ideas, as is shown in the snippet below, including auto-indenting and not letting me type where I want.

I would be happy to have Word auto-number etc. but can't I just have the numbering work without all the auto-indenting -- or, NOT auto-number, and let me completely control the numbering, indenting etc.?

I am obviously not understanding or doing something all wrong, because it is a he-- of a lot harder to get what I want than it should be.
