    The Microsoft page I was directed to above http://support.microsoft.com/kb/276044 details these entries but none of them are in my registry.

    Sorry - didn't see that link.

    I think you are going to have to consider a clean install on this one as I doubt MS would give you any free advice as support for SQL Server 7.0 ended long ago and from what I've seen on Google - SQL Server 7.0 wasn't a freebie anyway as it had its own install disk.

    What steps have you taken to resolve the Windows Update problem ?

    You could try either of these and if successful, just live with the phantom SQL Server.
